Singing Contest

Skill Challenge

The players learn that the mermaids songs have enchanting powers. The mermaids are willing to teach the players some of their melodies if they can prove themselves worthy performers. How will your party go about writing, singing and performing songs worthy of a mermaids tutelage?

Skill Check Ideas: If your players are stumped and need some ideas to get the ball rolling, here are some skill checks you could reccommend.

  • Performance check to compose or perform the music.

  • Acrobatics check to infuse some dance and style into your act.

  • Insight check to understand the mermaids musical preferences.

  • History check to recall traditional mermaid melodies.

  • Arcana check to incorporate magical elements into the performance.

  • Persuasion check to convince the mermaids of your musical prowess.

On a Success: The players have the opportunity to learn one of these eight magical melodies. They must succeed on either a Performance or Arcana (DC 10) skill check to add this song to their known abilities.

Results Based on # of Failures

  • 1 Failures: The players only have six song options to choose from.

  • 2 Failures: The players only have four songs to choose from.

  • 3 Failures: The mermaids are unimpressed and do not find the PCs worthy of learning any of their melodies.

Magical Mermaid Melodies

Dungeons and Dragons Mermaid encounter

We've crafted some magical melodies sung by mermaids. You can incorporate these into your game in a variety of ways, but here are some ideas for how to use them:

  • PCs have the opportunity to learn these melodies from a mermaid.

  • These mesmerizing songs are wielded by mermaids in combat.

  • These songs can serve as hazards requiring saving throws when navigating perilous Siren-infested waters.

Lullaby of the Tides

A soothing melody that captures the serene magic of the sea. When performed, this song envelops all who hear it within 30ft in a calming aura. The performer can use this song to invoke the effects of the Calm Emotions spell, although it is treated as a unique ability rather than a spell. This ability can be used once per long rest.

Healing Waters Hymn

A revitalizing hymn that channels the restorative power of the ocean. When sung, it allows the performer to heal a creature within 30 feet for 2d8 + the performer’s Charisma modifier. This ability can be used once per long rest.

The Torrential Tune

A powerful melody that calls forth the fury of a rainstorm. When performed, it allows the singer to summon a rainstorm that lasts for one hour, drenching the area in heavy rainfall. The rainstorm blankets the area within a one-mile radius, centered on the performer. This ability can be used once per long rest.

This ability lasts for 10 minutes and can be used once per long rest.

The Sea Queen's Melody

A regal song that honors the majesty of the sea queen. When performed as an action, it allows the singer to command the loyalty of water creatures with a CR 2 or less within a 60-foot radius. Affected creatures must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for 1 hour. Additionally, they will perform simple tasks requested by the performer. This ability can be used once per long rest.

As an action, when performed, it causes all creatures within 30 feet to make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or spend their turn using all their movement to get as close as they can to the singer. They cannot attack or cast spells that target the performer. They can repeat the saving throw at the start of every turn, spending their turn moving closer every round until they succeed. This ability can be used once per long rest.

Song of Coral's Embrace

A nurturing tune that offers protection. As an action, when sung, coral and barnacles grows from the singer's skin and armor, providing a sturdy shield. This grants the singer temporary hit points equal to 10 + their level. This ability can be used once per short rest.

Mermaid Lagoon Lair Actions

Enhance your players' experience with these captivating lair actions designed for a thrilling mermaid encounter set in a picturesque lagoon. These versatile actions can be seamlessly integrated into various water-themed settings to add depth and excitement to your game.

You can choose to use a new lair action each round or maintain the same action for multiple or all rounds, as desired. You could also roll a d8 on the table below to determine which effect occurs for the lair action.
